Case Details
JonBenet Ramsey's case is one of my favorite cases that I've been following for years. It blows my mind that it still goes unsolved, but it doesn't because of how the case was handled. There were so many things wrong with this case, and, sadly, no one could find the perpetrator even today. *Thoughts of my own throughout the case are in the red text*
JonBenet Ramsey was a child beauty pageant queen and followed the footsteps of her mother Patsy Ramsey, who was also a beauty pageant queen. The Ramsey case starts off during the holiday season in December of 1996. The Ramsey family went to sleep on December 25, 1996, Christmas Day, like it was any other ordinary night. They had spent time seeing family and friends, opening up presents, and having a good time on Christmas. Everyone went to be happy and with no issues. But when Patsy Ramsey woke up around 5:50 AM the following day and found a ransom note. The ransom note stated that their daughter, JonBenet Ramsey, had been kidnapped from home and demanded a large amount of money. They requested $118,000 from the Ramsey's bank account but were very specific about how they wanted the bills. They asked for $100,000 to be in $100 bills and the remaining $18,000 in $20 bills. That seemed a pretty specific amount of money and how they asked for it. Patsy Ramsey called 911 at 5:52AM and stated that she had found a ransom note on the staircase and that her daughter had been kidnapped.
Authorities from the Boulder Police Department arrived at their home within 3 minutes. The Boulder Police Department, Patsy Ramsey, and John Bennet Ramsey searched the house looking for her daughter and seeing if anything else was left behind. When they couldn't find anything else in the place, Patsy Ramsey decided to start calling her friends and family over, stating that someone had kidnapped JonBenet. The Boulder Police Department was still inside the house and the Ramsey family and friends. Very odd because she was abducted from her home, so the house is officially a crime scene. Since there is family and others there, the crime scene was contaminated and would bring back inconclusive results. After seven long hours of being reported missing and looking for her, the father, Jon Bennet Ramsey, had looked in the basement further in the house, wanting to try and find her. There was a door in the basement that had a latch on it. The police didn't look behind this door because they said they were looking for possible exits the suspect might have taken in the house. Since that door down in the basement was closed and latched, they didn't think the suspect went that way and never opened it. Until John did open it to check everything out and found JonBenet Ramsey's body on the floor. John let out a scream and quickly grabbed his daughter's body. JonBenét's mouth was covered with duct tape, a nylon cord was found around her wrists and neck, and her torso was covered by a white blanket. John picked up the child's body and took it upstairs. When JonBenét's body was moved, the crime scene was further contaminated. There was critical forensic evidence that was disturbed for the returning forensics team. Again, I understand how emotional it would be to find someone you love in the basement of your own home and dead, but since he touched the body, his fingerprints and DNA are all over her body. She had head trauma from being hit and suffered from strangulation. She was found with a garrote around her neck. A wire, cord, or apparatus used to strangle someone. JonBenet's body was carried away by the coroner and sent for an autopsy. The autopsy came back with the results of her cause of death. She had died from asphyxia by strangulation associated with craniocerebral trauma. They ruled her cause of death as a homicide. So who killed her?
There were some suspicions about Patsy Ramsey, the mother, because the ransom note was very similar to Patsy's handwriting. Very interesting! Forensic investigators and handwriting analysts studied both the ransom note and Patsy's writing. They also noticed a white legal notepad in the kitchen on the counter. The top of the ransom note, which looked like it was ripped out of something rather than printed, matched up precisely to the missing page from the legal notepad in the kitchen. The Boulder Police Department found this very odd and instantly looked at both parents as the prime suspects in the case. Years go by, and there were back and forth battles about filing charges against the Ramseys for hindering a police investigation and were indicted on charges such as child abuse charges and more. All charges were eventually dropped. In 1993, Patsy was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer. She received treatment and was in remission for 9 years until it came back in 2002. She ended up passing away on June 24, 2006, with her husband John right beside her. She is buried next to JonBenet in Marietta, Georgia.
The case is still open and remains unsolved with no new leads. Recently in 2016, JonBenet's brother Burke Ramsey sat down with an interview with Dr. Phil. People who were watching always wondered if he had anything to do with his sister's death, but that was already cleared away in 1999. The Boulder Police Department released a statement stating that he is not a suspect and had nothing to do with his sister's death.
Her case is still a mystery and hopefully one day, it will be solved...
